My experience at Agha Khan Hospital

My experience at Agha Khan Hospital

It was my first experience of staying in a hospital in Pakistan. It was an unforgettable experience and one that I will never forget for the rest of my life. Let me tell you about my experience.

Being Hospitalized

It was during the month of May, when I realized that I had trouble breathing and was wheezing a lot. I was wheezing a lot while I had something to eat and my heart rate was very high. I along with my parents were asked to see a cardiologist by the name of Dr Fahim Jafri at Agha Khan hospital. Upon seeing me and that my heart rate had risen, he asked me to be hospitalized to monitor my condition. It was obviously very frustrating to stay in the hospital, but I realized it was for my benefit so that things do not worsen.

Testing time in the Hospital

It was a very tough and a testing time in the hospital for me. As my room was in the cardiac ward, there was no television allowed there which made it very tough for me. All the time the medical staff was coming to give me medication and do various tests on me. I remember being woken up at 5 in the morning for giving a blood test and ECG for the heart. In the morning the staff cleaned and changed me. I was wearing an oxygen wire and another machine was attached to me to monitor my heart rate and blood pressure. A lot of medication was being given to me in order to stabilize my heart rate. The whole day I just stared at the walls, killing time. It was very difficult for me to read also in my given situation. I did have visitors in the evening, including some of my friends. The visiting hours were in the evening and only one person was allowed in the room. My mother stayed with me during the day and my khala came in the evening. During the night a helper of mine stayed with me.

Benefit of being in the Hospital

Just lying in the bed all the time also took its toll on me and my legs became totally stiff. I hardly felt hungry in the hospital environment. I guess the advantage of being in the hospital was that there was peace and quietness in my room which was very essential and important for me. Dr Jafri also visited me a couple of times during the day and after four days he told me that I could be discharged the following day. For the last two days I had started having physiotherapy which made my legs feel a lot better and I could also get down from the bed and sit in my chair which was a big relief for me. After spending five days in the hospital, I was a relieved and happy person to be going home. Little did I realize that after 2 weeks I would be back at the hospital.

Hospitalized for the second time

It was just after a couple of weeks that upon having my heart rate checked which was quite low, I was taken to Agha Khan hospital at Clifton for an ECG. Upon having the ECG, Dr Jafri asked the doctors to have me hospitalized again. I was taken in an ambulance, lying on a stretcher in a state of emergency to the main Agha Khan hospital and was feeling quite terrified. It was for the first time in my life that I had gone in an ambulance. After two days of monitoring of the heart, it was due to the excessive take of medication that resulted in my heart rate being low. Dr Jafri had already suspected that and he asked the staff to stop my medication. Upon stopping the medication my heart rate had stabilized which was very good and encouraging news. On the third day I was discharged and hoped and prayed that I would never have to be hospitalized again.

Dr Fahim Jafri an excellent doctor

So it was quite an experience staying in the hospital twice for a total of 8 days. I guess there were some benefits of staying in the hospital which included having 24 hour monitoring and taken very good care by the medical staff. As I have mentioned having total quietness in my room which allowed me to rest properly. I would like to make a special mention of Dr Fahim Jafri. I found him to be an excellent doctor who took great care of me. He used to be very relaxed when he came to examine me, which gave me a great deal of comfort. All the medication he has given me has suited me fully and has been instrumental in my heart being normal again by the grace of God.

Loss of weight was a blessing in disguise for me

I would have to say that I have never had so many blood tests and taken so much medication in my life. The biggest blessing in disguise resulting from my illness was the loss of weight. I had lost 15 pounds during my illness, which was very good news for me. The reason being that I was going to England later in June and it was important for me to be as light as possible. Due to God’s blessing I have been able to recover in time for my trip to England which I am really looking forward to.

Lessons learnt from my ordeal

My parents also had to go through a lot of stress and were worried about me. It was their never ending support and caring attitude which helped me tremendously during my ordeal. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone including my friends who prayed for me and came to see me during my illness. The lesson I have learnt from this episode of mine is to remain cool and calm in all situations and never to lose my temper. I do still go for my check up to Dr Jafri and he is very pleased to see me. My heart rate by the grace of God has stabilized now and I am looking forward to my vacation in England. Indeed it was the toughest and most testing time I have been through in my life. Thank God all is well now and it is all behind me now.
